MoMA UPCOMING CHILDREN´S BOOK

Sonia Delaunay: A Life of Color
Writter: Cara Manes / Illustrations: Fatinha Ramos, with artwork by Sonia Delaunay
Language: English; French; Korean... / Published: MoMA, The Museum of Modern Art New York

Sonia Delaunay (1885–1979), a painter and textile, theater, and fashion designer, made enormous contributions to the development of abstraction in the early 1900s, along with her husband Robert Delaunay. In this vividly illustrated children’s book, Sonia Delaunay and her six-year-old son Charles embark on a fantastical adventure in a world of color and form, inspired by Charles’s rediscovery of a patchwork blanket his mother made for him when he was born. A magical road trip in a car modeled after Delaunay’s 1925 design for a Citroën convertible take mother and son through a landscape of colors and shapes drawn from Delaunay’s early abstract compositions—as if they’ve driven into one of her paintings. They also explore the artist’s colorful designs for fabrics and clothing. Throughout, Delaunay helps Charles understand her artistic process by asking him what shapes and colors he recognizes along the way. When they end up back in the real world, Charles realizes that his mother’s thoughts about art permeate every aspect of their life.

Featuring reproductions of Delaunay’s colorful artwork, this book is a charming introduction to abstraction and to a groundbreaking artist of the early twentieth century.
